Android apps are limited to 256 MB of storage space

I actually didn't know this, and I'm really shocked. For some bizarre reason, Google doesn't allow for apps to be installed to any removable storage, like a SD-card. I'm assuming this is for piracy reasons, but it seems like an odd restriction either way. This means that the applications need to be stored on the built in memory of any Android phone, which in the case of the newly released Droid ("the iPhone killer") means 512 MB, of which 256 MB can be used for applications.
256 MB, that's puny! If you install the Myst game on your iPhone, it claims 533 MB, for one game. If you're like me and have installed the Tom Tom app for western europe, it claims a whopping 1.64 GB! This is peanuts for my 32 GB built in memory of my iPhone of course, but wouldn't be possible at all on an Android phone.
This is pretty ironic, given the advertising material for the Droid, which focused a lot on supposed shortcomings of the iPhone, like not having a replaceable battery. What about this shortcoming of the Droid/Android?
